Have you ever seen an animation still, of an astronaut guy and a cute alien and thought “yeah this will be good to watch with our 6-year-old?”. That’s exactly what happened at CryoGenik_ HQ when we saw Final Space pop up on Netflix.
The series follows an “astronaut”, Gary, and his cute green sidekick, Mooncake. Together, they go on adventures through space in order to unlock the mystery of where the universe actually ends, and if it actually does exist.
The 10 episodes of season 1 are the last 10 minutes of Gary’s life, with each episode telling part of the story of how he got there. We learn landed with him his 5 year jail sentence (trying to impress a girl), how he met Mooncake, and how he found his friends along the way.
Gary, as a hero, is childish, arrogant and probably a bit bi-polar. When he encounters Mooncake, the pair form an odd bond – bad news for Gary because Mooncake is a planet destroyer who is wanted by the Lord Commander, a tiny little bad guy voiced by David Tennant. Gary annoys and eventually befriends a bounty hunter named Avocato, who is sent to retrieve Mooncake, and eventually he teams up with Avocato to his son Little Cato, voiced the by The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun. Along the way they encounter Gary’s love interest Quinn, and team up to save the world, or universe, because that sounds way cooler.
The show is gorgeously animated, fun to watch for adults and children, and has left me curious about season 2. The end of season 1 was ambigious, with Gary being offered the choice to accept his fate or go back to carry on fighting. I’m curious to see what happens with Gary’s character, at the minute he’s an ass-hole, but an ok guy, he’s like a very toned down Rick Sanchez. I’d definitely like to see him as a more likeable character, with a bit more character development. In an ideal world all of the characters could have done with a bit more development, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what season 2 brings!
